INTACT (Interfaz para la acción telecompartida – Interface for teleshared action) is a cyber culture project on the crossroads of art and the new technologies. It is a proposal directed by Sara Malinarich and Manuel Terán.

INTACT is dedicated to the development of teleshared action and to the formation of collaborative networks amongst spaces and artists of all disciplines. The principal objectives of INTACT network are : the collaborative creation of networking systems, the production of collective thinking and the development of free technology.

The goal of a teleshared action is to produce a collaborative work amongst two or more users with telematic tools. Diverse analog or digital artistic expressions are taken from these systems and put back into it in real time.

The result of a teleshared action is a work that has been created in between interconnected users, where everyone is client and server (node).

The term “teleshared actions” has been used for the first time by Sara Malinarich at the end of 2004 during the development of the Órbita[05] project, a previous phase of the INTACT Project.

In 2005, the project Órbita[05] was presented in the international colloquium Theatrics and Resistance, organized by the University of Castilla La-Mancha. In this context the first teleshared actions were achieved amongst artists located in Sweden, Chile and Spain.

After these first experiences – which bonded artists from Europe and Latin America – a new project has been formalized called INTACT, Interface for teleshared action, with a large outlook onto the field of creation through distance, added with educative goals, investigational intentions, technological experimentation and development.

It was a shortage that created the necessity for an artistic project of telepresence with a wide range: the lack of a network of people and cultural agents, stable and flexible, capable to produce and evolve the telecommunications systems as a media for creation.

The creation of this network allows resolving four crucial aspects:

1) The creation of new forms of interaction serving as references for later developments

2) The contribution to the conscience of a collaborative, multicultural and

interdisciplinary project.

3) The construction of a theoretical ground on these practices

4) The development of free technologies for telepresence projects

To include these four aspects we created four lines of sustained work:

1. Experimentation with telecommunication and computing systems

2. Workshops for artistic telepresence in order to build up nodes in different cities

3. Creation of critical thought; theoretical texts and publications

4. Investigation and exploration of technologies for the artistic telepresence

The importance of these aspects is perpendicular. The tele-presence is a communication media that channels the different forms of social behavior in the 21st century. Therefore it should be experimented, studied, understood and evolved. The construction of new communication forms, its languages and uniting factor should be kept in the territory of the common (free and accessible for everyone), that is why artists, creators and hackers should realize independently the studies and development.

The configuration of creative environments and discourses in the area of communication through distance also includes a certain type of activism and resistance against the big possessive, and monopolizing corporations. Taking control of this media.

The INTACT project is completely self financed and is nourished by artists, hackers, theoreticians and independent programmers. These people joined the project over the last ten years in order to support the vision of INTACT. It is obviously the network of these that is the principal support and the motor that keeps INTACT going.

The main way for INTACT to build up new nodes is through the elaboration of workshops about teleshared interactions, within the environment of artistic telepresence. They are taking place at fine art faculties and centers for the artistic creation and production. The workshops are essential, because they allow:

1) To connect people with the same interest in these new areas, thus creating new relationships on an intercultural level

2) To educate the participants at working with networks through distance and multidisciplinary teams

3) To increase the systems for teleshared actions and the interactions themselves

After each workshop or teleshared action, the participants are invited to continue the project as a part of it. This way they can contribute to the project in the area of investigation they are interested in, and are welcome to propose new teleshared actions to the rest of the network. The network responds in equality and total freedom to carry on with the ideas of its members.

In order to find appropriate spaces, the artists find them in their own cities, e.g. public or private spaces, rural possibilities or in the urban area. Regarding the Internet connection the artists decide and manage their own way to interact through distance, using the achievable media (internet fix installed or from a mobile device with small or big bandwidth).

To carry out a concert or an interaction, the INTACT project is interested in the hybridization of spaces. It provides a digital skin that allows its transfiguration and finally its conversion into one active space.

During a teleshared action the participants are neo-nomads. They manage their node with freedom and provide the essential directions and devices in order to become a participant for the rest of the collaborators.

At the moment INTACT is incorporating controlled robotic devices through distance. The use of free computing systems for hardware and software allows to capture information of the physical and digital world, and to diffuse it in the internet network, therefore searching for multi-sensorial interactions between users.

During the process of teleshared actions it becomes obvious how the mind is negotiating when it gets to the moment of constructing reality and its transformation from one to another communication system. Through the new forms of communication, not only the technology has evolved, but also the psyche, the way of thinking, feeling, and therefore the way of conceiving ideas. At the same time, these explorations open up new paths for imagining new processes for social, cultural and artistic relations. The possibilities of improvisation are the key to solve the problems that emerge from our systems.

Essentially, telepresence is a form of desire of the other. The creative practices through distance are implying the necessity of a network conscience, and the appreciation of the fragility of the moment of the connection – as well as technological, psychological and emotional- and the predisposition of co-authorship and collaborative work.
