PROGRAMING AND CREATION

INTRODUCTION:

INTACT is an experimental research project, in the field of cyberculture, dedicated to the development of teleshared actions (1)   It uses telepresence and the constitution of a cooperative network for shared telematic creation. Our research is an attempt  to observe the mind’s negotiations within its process to understand the construction of augmented reality, as well as the transformation, within a system of mediatized communication and perception, of oneself in front of another. Creation through distance, via telematic transmission, participate in the demolition of sociocultural and territorial borders, sheds light on the drama of absence and the possibility of cohesion between people through technological spell. One of our strategy for telepresence is trying to surpass the limitations of the world’s physical reality. We will intent, via remote communication, to overcome the notion of “bodyless messages” inherent in telecommunication systems. Telepresence is itself an expanded communication, therefore it enables corporal messages to be implemented into interpersonal relations. Nevertheless, communication through distance implies numerous problematics occurring with data transmission, besides the ones that can be found in the physical world.  Among these problematics are : space, time, body, mind, connection, context, message, interactions, audiences and interfaces. Telepresence is, by essence, a form of illusive desire for the other. But practices of telematic creation suppose the need of a networked collective awareness; a certain conscience of the fragility occuring during physical, emotional or technological connection, as well as a predisposition for co-responsability (co-author) and collaborative work.

VISION FOR COLLABORATIVE PRACTICES (Abstract): – Working and to create in network – Developing devices and interfaces for use of all the network, sharing the tools and the improvement of the same among the community. – The creation of independent contents with its localities problematic to share them in a telematic dialogue in situ. – Democratic access to the technology and the connection:  Small wide of band connected to the wide of larger band. – The possibility of cohesion among people of different realities, cultures and disciplines. – Co-authors in network and new narratives and creative constructions – Each user is a client/server (node)

SUMMARY OF THE RESIDENCE PROJECT: PROJECT: Teleshared multicast installation We will work in the development of a TELESHARED MULTICAST INSTALLATION to development of “transpersonal technologies” and cyberception. More precisely,  our idea is to create experiences enabling us to play with the space & time notions through delocalization : transforming space into time. We plan on working on the development of new options for individuals to perceive and transform their relation to others. For this, we will experiment with the senses, and will try to overcome the notion of “bodyless messages”. The idea is to allow a sensitive modification of remote spaces, an exemple would be to expand it to the possibilities of physical touch, in order to venture into more corporal messages. - Robotics: Arduinos in network for the sensory and analog experience. – Telecommunications: audiovisual communication by scenic – Virtual reality: 3D for contents and interactive imaginaries Within these three lines of technological development, we are looking forward to open new spaces, new issues and relations, new narrative forms, new meanings, new consciousness, new ethics and aesthetics, new emotions, new bodies : transhumance-transmind.

DEVELOPMENT: Technological development: Arduinos in network

1.- ROBOTIC: Analog telepresence Supervised by Hangar interactive and production laboratories. Programer and developers: Alex Posada (Arduino) and Sergi Larios (server), with the collaboration of developers from SAT (Alexandre Quessy and Micha Seta).

Development and implementation of networked Arduinos connected directly by Ethernet inputs. That way, neither the computer nor a specific software is necessary. Within this “Arduinos network”, each node will be able to receive and send data (client/ server). In order to manage communication and connect the different nodes, we will set up a server and a website providing a control panel. With this control panel, each user will be able to configure the connections between Arduinos (inputs and outputs). For a first phase, we are thinking of distributing Arduinos among INTACT community as a complement to Scenic software. Scenic has a MIDI module, therefore it will be possible to connect this networked Arduinos via MIDI protocol, and thus creating a bridge between hardware and software.

The Arduino nodes, although interconnected, can be developed independently, through a simple and cheap process. This potential will help extend telepresence possibilities and experiments. At the same time, networked Arduinos connected by Ethernet will help expandin the network of nodes and enable the convergence of users regardless their connection speed.This will allow multicast network by sensors and actuators. This implementation to Scenic system will allow more corporal and sensorial experiences, knowing that any sensorial experience needs a comprehension of its cause and effect. Adding to this the audiovisual component inherent to any telecommunication system, we envision this development as a possibility to expand the experience of telepresence within telecommunicatio (Scenic).

2.- TELECOMUNICATION: Visualization and development of temporal space.

Supervised by INTACT. Artists: Alexandre Berthier, Sara Malinarich and Manuel Terán. In remote collaboration:  Materiaviva from Plat0 (Laboral. Centro de arte y creación industrial, Gijón, Spain). For telecommunication, we defend the need for : – 1:1 scale visual connection, – the invisibility of the technology, – the experience of a permanent connection through the use and development of Scenic We will explore spatial configurations and interrelation between teleshared spaces for collaborative creation.

Creation: Production of 3D contents

3.- VIRTUAL REALITY Supervised by INTACT. Artists: Alexandre Berthier, Sara Malinarich and Manuel Terán. Infographist: François Mourre The real-time interactiveness will work itself in order to working in new imaginary.  For this we will use in module MIDI of Scenic.

  (1)The purpose of a teleshared action is to produce a collaborative artwork among two or more users. Sharing through Internet all kind of archives and audiovisual information o sensory  through software and hardware, which take and place in common areas diverse artistic manifestations in real time. The result of teleshared action is a creation in co-responsibility (coauthor) among users connected, where each one is -at the same time- client/server (nodes).
