INTRODUCTION

"Just In Case" happened on december 9th 2011.

It took place in four different art centers simultaneously. A performer in Laboral (Gijon, Spain) interacted with an installation in Hangar (Barcelona, Spain) 

while a musical collaboration among five musicians occurred between Lieu Multiple (Poitiers, France) and Laboral. 

A remote audience in SAT (Montreal, Canada) watched the whole process.

The performer in Laboral dropped ropes on the floor. It activated sensors which triggered motors, in Hangar.  The motors opened boxes of salt placed on the ceiling, and activated 3D video elements projected onto the floor around the salt.

Dans le cadre du projet « télépresence artistique » que mènent actuellement le Lieu multiple/ECM et la SAT de Montréal et dont l’objectif est de permettre la connexion de lieux entre eux, afin d’expérimenter, de diffuser de nouvelles propositions artistique dans ce domaine de la création numérique.

Le Lieu multiple a collaboré avec Laboral à Gijon, la SAT à Montréal et le Hangar à Barcelone pour cette expérimentation Just in Case qui se définit comme une création collaborative en temps réel.

Le travail de préparation et de calage a permis d’optimiser les performances de l’application Scenic (Alexandre Quessy) de la SAT afin d’autoriser le jeu à distance entre les 2 musiciennes de du groupe Las Casicasiotone à Gijon

Cette création à distance a servi d’accompagnement musical à une performance dansée à Laboral dont les images étaient visibles par les musiciens à Poitiers.

Cette expérience sera suivie en 2012 d’autres projets artistiques entre les différents lieux impliqués afin de permettre ce travail et de le pousser plus en avant autour de performances, de projet théâtraux, de danse et d’approche hybrides à mi chemin entre l’installation et le spectacle vivant ou mêlant les deux.

Les prochaines semaines vont permettre d’avancer sur le projet « téléprésence artistique » qui implique actuellement les deux artistes , Yan Breuleux (Montréal) et Robin Meier (Paris), pour un projet qui sera diffusé à l’automne 2012 à Poitiers (Planétarium) et la SAT (Montréal).

Une première résidence fin janvier va permettre à Robin Meier de préparer cette création à la SAT en relation avec le Lieu multiple et dans ce processus d’échange avec la SAT.

Our proposal for this workshop has been to carry out a permanent connection with Labor for telecompartir.  In principle, this workshop was thought to be a workshop for the creation telecompartida.  Nevertheless, now we have opened the workshop toward the different forms of TELEPRESENCIA due to the interest of other artists and collective by participating and to put in common its ideas on the telepresencia.  In this way, during the days 9-10-12-13-14-15 of December 2011, the participants to the workshop will be able to have different visions relating to these practices.

This workshop is focused to generate a space of experimentation with the new technologies in the environment of the telepresencia.  

It is an experience lived meetings during a week – musicians, artists, technical – experiencing with the telepresencia and its capacity of creating spaces, forms, creations shared.  

The telepresencia in the shape of skype already deeply is implied in the company – at the level I publish chiefly in its audiovisual format via skype – therapeutas do sessions to distance, families communicate – but is also basic to the modern war (the famous "drones") and to the spatial explorations or below the oceans.  

Here we want to investigate their use to create a space shared for encounters, the action to distance, the joint audiovisual creation with software and hardware free – along a week will work in the opening of different stations/spaces since where intervene and to be communicated in remote by means of the test of tools that permit an interactive communication through: the exchange of data, the alteration of the sensory conditions and Environmental, systems of control to distance or the creation of virtual spaces from the Reality Enlarged.  

Besides the work with the technology, is sought to generate a critical focus that permit to question the own spaces since where works itself, in this case, spaces of cultural production and public institutions.  From a critical positioning reflections environment to concepts will be presented like perception, senses, interface, control, reality, the occupation and intervention to the public and institutional space, and the biopolítica.  

The technological tools that will be utilized along the workshop they are the software Scenic for telecommunication and basic modules of Arduino and PureData.  

The workshop goes directed to: artists, creative, or desarrolladores of tools, interested in the Telepresencia since different creative environments (dances, VJing, digital arts, performance etc.).  They are not necessary prior know-how in the tools that will be utilized although yes an interest by the experimentation with these technologies.

INTRODUCTION:

INTACT is an experimental research project, in the field of cyberculture, dedicated to the development of teleshared actions (1)   It uses telepresence and the constitution of a cooperative network for shared telematic creation. Our research is an attempt  to observe the mind’s negotiations within its process to understand the construction of augmented reality, as well as the transformation, within a system of mediatized communication and perception, of oneself in front of another. Creation through distance, via telematic transmission, participate in the demolition of sociocultural and territorial borders, sheds light on the drama of absence and the possibility of cohesion between people through technological spell. One of our strategy for telepresence is trying to surpass the limitations of the world’s physical reality. We will intent, via remote communication, to overcome the notion of "bodyless messages" inherent in telecommunication systems. Telepresence is itself an expanded communication, therefore it enables corporal messages to be implemented into interpersonal relations. Nevertheless, communication through distance implies numerous problematics occurring with data transmission, besides the ones that can be found in the physical world.  Among these problematics are : space, time, body, mind, connection, context, message, interactions, audiences and interfaces. Telepresence is, by essence, a form of illusive desire for the other. But practices of telematic creation suppose the need of a networked collective awareness; a certain conscience of the fragility occuring during physical, emotional or technological connection, as well as a predisposition for co-responsability (co-author) and collaborative work.

SUMMARY OF THE RESIDENCE PROJECT: PROJECT: Teleshared multicast installation We will work in the development of a TELESHARED MULTICAST INSTALLATION to development of "transpersonal technologies" and cyberception. More precisely,  our idea is to create experiences enabling us to play with the space & time notions through delocalization : transforming space into time. We plan on working on the development of new options for individuals to perceive and transform their relation to others. For this, we will experiment with the senses, and will try to overcome the notion of "bodyless messages". The idea is to allow a sensitive modification of remote spaces, an exemple would be to expand it to the possibilities of physical touch, in order to venture into more corporal messages. - Robotics: Arduinos in network for the sensory and analog experience. – Telecommunications: audiovisual communication by scenic – Virtual reality: 3D for contents and interactive imaginaries Within these three lines of technological development, we are looking forward to open new spaces, new issues and relations, new narrative forms, new meanings, new consciousness, new ethics and aesthetics, new emotions, new bodies : transhumance-transmind.

DEVELOPMENT: Technological development: Arduinos in network

1.- ROBOTIC: Analog telepresence Supervised by Hangar interactive and production laboratories. Programer and developers: Alex Posada (Arduino) and Sergi Larios (server), with the collaboration of developers from SAT (Alexandre Quessy and Micha Seta).

Development and implementation of networked Arduinos connected directly by Ethernet inputs. That way, neither the computer nor a specific software is necessary. Within this “Arduinos network”, each node will be able to receive and send data (client/ server). In order to manage communication and connect the different nodes, we will set up a server and a website providing a control panel. With this control panel, each user will be able to configure the connections between Arduinos (inputs and outputs). For a first phase, we are thinking of distributing Arduinos among INTACT community as a complement to Scenic software. Scenic has a MIDI module, therefore it will be possible to connect this networked Arduinos via MIDI protocol, and thus creating a bridge between hardware and software.  

 The Arduino nodes, although interconnected, can be developed independently, through a simple and cheap process. This potential will help extend telepresence possibilities and experiments. At the same time, networked Arduinos connected by Ethernet will help expandin the network of nodes and enable the convergence of users regardless their connection speed.This will allow multicast network by sensors and actuators. This implementation to Scenic system will allow more corporal and sensorial experiences, knowing that any sensorial experience needs a comprehension of its cause and effect. Adding to this the audiovisual component inherent to any telecommunication system, we envision this development as a possibility to expand the experience of telepresence within telecommunicatio (Scenic).

For telecommunication, we defend the need for : – 1:1 scale visual connection, – the invisibility of the technology, – the experience of a permanent connection through the use and development of Scenic We will explore spatial configurations and interrelation between teleshared spaces for collaborative creation.
