CASCO DE ONDAS CEREBRALES Y WEBCONTROL: TELEPRESENCIA Y ROBÓTICA
Interacción a distancia vía casco de ondas cerebrales.

Desde el centro de arte Arteleku Donostia-San Sebastián, Jaime de los Ríos está controlando las luces, el brazo fonocaptor del tocadisco y el encendido del mismo a través del casco de ondas cerebrales que lleva puesto. El casco capta dos parámetros (meditación y concentración), mientras que la prolongación del casco en la zona de la frente captura la información del nervio óptico. De esta forma, el actor en remoto puede activar los botones del webcontrol, donde su mente y los ojos  hacen las veces del ratón.

RETROALIMENTACIÓN

Iluminación interactiva a distancia: Estas luces se encienden vía internet, reaccionando al sonido.

El feedback es la base de una acción telecompartida. Un diálogo telemático entre nodos (Cliente y Servidor al mismo tiempo). La música que Jaime de los Ríos hacía sonar en Madrid con su casco de ondas cerebrales retroalimentaba unas luces que estaban en su lugar de acción. De esta forma, un acto que tiene su causa el un lugar remoto (Donostia en este caso), tiene su efecto en el espacio de Madrid, y ese efecto se trasforma en una causa en Madrid de otro efecto en remoto (Donostia).

TELECONTROL DE UN ESCENARIO ROBOTIZADO. INTERACCIÓN A DISTANCIA VÍA WEBCONTROL

Prototipo para escenario expandido; robótica llevada a la puesta en escena.  El tocadisco, el brazo fonocaptor así como las luces están conectadas a dos placas de arduino que están en red y conectadas con un servidor.

Un usuario, desde cualquier lugar del mundo, vía internet, puede controlar las luces, el brazo fonocaptor y el encendido del toca disco.

Durante el mes de enero dimos inicio a la primera fase del proyecto huésped. Entre  los días 25 y 28 de enero, investigamos sobre programas e interfaces para la visualización en directo de video (streaming). Probamos con sistemas de videoconferencia multipunto y VLC. Finalizamos este arranque del proyecto, con fines de coordinación y experimentación, con una acción telecompartida en conexión P2P.

Acción telecompartida entre Jaime de los Ríos (Donostia) y artistas localizados en el espacio de Hypernoika (Barcelona). Mapping, video en tiempo real.

FIN DE LA 1º FASE DE HUÉSPED: PRESENTACIÓN PÚBLICA DE INTACT Y EL PROYECTO HUÉSPED Y SUS RESULTADOS.

El proyecto Huésped ha sido presentado en el Centro de Innovación BBVA.  Conferencia y demostración de telepresencia robotizada y control a distancia, en  "Web. la conversación". 14 de Marzo de 2013, Madrid.

Conexión en tiempo real con Jaime de los Ríos, quien desde el Centro de Creación Arteleku-Tabakalera (Donostia, España), controló las luces con sus ondas cerebrales a través del casco que lleva puesto. A su vez, la música que él hacía sonar en Madrid retroalimentaba unas luces que estaban en su lugar de Acción.

El proyecto Huésped es un proyecto independiente de investigación, desarrollo y creación artística, que tiende su ruta entre los campos del arte y las nuevas tecnologías: Una propuesta de innovación basada en la investigación y el desarrollo de tecnologías para el arte de la comunicación expandida; concretamente, la telepresencia multiusuario a través de Internet y la interacción a distancia entre espacios híbridos.

Al mismo tiempo, Huésped es una formulación para la creación y la producción artística en red, la generación de contenidos audiovisuales a través de Internet y la transferencia de conocimiento compartido a distancia.

El proyecto Huésped es una iniciativa del proyecto de cibercultura INTACT (interfaz para la acción telecompartida), dirigido por Sara Malinarich, en co-autoría y con la colaboración de Manuel Terán, Jaime de los Ríos (ArtekLab), Laura R. Moscatel, Axel Guillaumet (Hypernoika), Alexandre Berthier y María Domíguez Alba.

Interacción a distancia vía webcontrol. Proyecto de telepresencia artística, HUÉSPED (1º fase), por INTACT Project. Cibercultura, arte y percepción

La percepción que tenemos sobre nuestras tecnologías es un “radar” para el control de sus consecuencias psíquicas, sociales y culturales.

Puntualmente, las tecnologías de la comunicación han modificado aspectos de la vida tan profundos como el modo de sentir de los seres humanos. En esta relación entre tecnología, percepción y vida, el arte pone en evidencia y lleva al límite las negociaciones de la mente en la construcción de la realidad.

Sin embargo, la realidad se torna cada día más compleja, especialmente la realidad social. Hablamos de una sociedad en red, compuesta por individuos que co-habitan de manera simultánea en diferentes planos de realidad.

A su vez, se trata de individuos inmersos en este proceso social y cultural particularmente ligado a los medios de comunicación masivos y a las tecnologías. Por tanto, no sólo se trata de una relación casi gestáltica, sino también de una arquitectura viva y fluida a la que McLuhan llamó en una primera instancia la “Aldea global”.

Posteriormente, el propio McLuhan visionó una fase superior a la que llamó Sociedad de la Información y el Conocimiento. Esta visión anticiparía el advenimiento de Internet donde la transferencia de “mensajes” viajaría a altas velocidades y en múltiples sentidos.

Pero lo que ha calado profundamente en nuestro “emocionario” va más allá de la transmisión de datos en tiempo real o la mejora de las tecnologías de la comunicación; lo que realmente deseamos es al otro en plenitud; todo esto bajo un concepto fundamental: Transformar el espacio en tiempo.

Sobre la base de las nuevas interfaces para un feedback que busca ser más eficaz, queremos superar el mensaje sin cuerpo propio de las telecomunicaciones y pasar a mensajes más corpóreos. La sola posibilidad de un cuerpo expandido, capaz de modificar un espacio remoto, abre una serie de hipótesis sobre nuevas configuraciones en la arquitectura del mundo físico y de la red. En un sistema reversible, no sólo formamos parte de la red sino que, al mismo tiempo, podemos llegar a contenerla.

¿Qué supondría esta mejora de la experiencia de la telepresencia en el campo del arte? ¿Qué tiene de íntimo y de público el arte de la comunicación expandida? ¿Cuánto hemos desarrollado el lenguaje, tanto estético como tecnológico, en la creación a distancia? ¿Cuáles son las zonas de acción de la creación telecompartida?

Desde la visión de las prácticas artísticas, la imaginación, la observación y la participación permiten poner a prueba las nuevas capacidades y facultades del individuo dentro de sus procesos de inmersión, tanto tecnológico como antropológico. Por esta razón, el proyecto Huésped contempla la investigación, el desarrollo y la  producción de contenidos y nuevos guiones artísticos cuyo soporte, establecido en espacios tanto locales como en la red, abre una oportunidad para la innovación y para nuevos procesos creativos compartidos.

OBJETIVOS Y FINALIDADES

Objetivo general: 

El proyecto Huésped tiene como principal objetivo continuar con el desarrollo e implementación de tecnologías de la comunicación expandida en espacios de producción artística para la creación en tiempo real entre espacios y artistas localizados en distintos lugares del mundo. Estas herramientas son el soporte tecnológico para la creación in situ por medio de la telepresencia, en un contexto de colaboración internacional y a partir de tecnologías libres y de código abierto.

La finalidad de este desarrollo es poner en observación, reflexión y experimentación los nuevos modelos de comunicación expandida, así como la generación y difusión de contenidos artísticos y nuevos productos culturales en red.

Objetivos específicos

Promover e incentivar: 

1) Las prácticas de la creación colaborativa a distancia. 

2) El trabajo en red. 

3) La incorporación de nuevas audiencias desde cualquier punto geográfico. 

4) Contribución al desarrollo de herramientas tecnológicas para la telepresencia (Software Scènic)

5) La investigación y experimentación sobre nuevos soportes digitales para la innovación.

A su vez:

5) Explorar nuevos lenguajes y contenidos creativos devenidos del uso de la telepresencia en el ámbito del arte, la cultura y la comunicación interactiva en la red.

6) Explorar las distintas posibilidades y niveles de inmersión del sujeto/usuario en el espacio remoto.

7) Reflexionar y teorizar sobre la situación del sujeto/artista en nuevos contextos, tanto interculturales como espaciotemporales.

8) Observar las relaciones y conexiones entre los sujetos/artistas a partir de la creación in situ y las nuevas formas de comunicación a distancia.

9) Favorecer instancias de fortalecimiento de una red de colaboración internacional entre artistas y espacios.

LÍNEAS DE INVESTIGACIÓN Y DESARROLLO

• Diseño de Interfaces interactivas controladas a distancia a través de Internet.

• Implementación de componentes de la robótica para la telepresencia sensorial. 

• Creación de entornos inmersivos de realidad virtual y realidad aumentada. 

METODOLOGÍA DE TRABAJO

El networking como método de trabajo y creación. Conexión entre artistas, desarrolladores y centros.

Durante el desarrollo de tecnologías e interfaces para la creación a distancia, el proyecto Huésped contempla conexiones periódicas internacionales con las siguientes finalidades:

• La coordinación del proyecto

• El testeo de las herramientas e interfaces

• La generación de contenidos artísticos

• La experimentación tecnológica y creativa

• El fortalecimiento de la red de colaboración

• La incorporación de otros artistas vinculados al centro que deseen probar sus desarrollos personales en la dimensión de la telepresencia.

Dans le cadre du projet « télépresence artistique » que mènent actuellement le Lieu multiple/ECM et la SAT de Montréal et dont l’objectif est de permettre la connexion de lieux entre eux, afin d’expérimenter, de diffuser de nouvelles propositions artistique dans ce domaine de la création numérique.

Le Lieu multiple a collaboré avec Laboral à Gijon, la SAT à Montréal et le Hangar à Barcelone pour cette expérimentation Just in Case qui se définit comme une création collaborative en temps réel.

Le travail de préparation et de calage a permis d’optimiser les performances de l’application Scenic (Alexandre Quessy) de la SAT afin d’autoriser le jeu à distance entre les 2 musiciennes de du groupe Las Casicasiotone à Gijon

Cette création à distance a servi d’accompagnement musical à une performance dansée à Laboral dont les images étaient visibles par les musiciens à Poitiers.

Cette expérience sera suivie en 2012 d’autres projets artistiques entre les différents lieux impliqués afin de permettre ce travail et de le pousser plus en avant autour de performances, de projet théâtraux, de danse et d’approche hybrides à mi chemin entre l’installation et le spectacle vivant ou mêlant les deux.

Les prochaines semaines vont permettre d’avancer sur le projet « téléprésence artistique » qui implique actuellement les deux artistes , Yan Breuleux (Montréal) et Robin Meier (Paris), pour un projet qui sera diffusé à l’automne 2012 à Poitiers (Planétarium) et la SAT (Montréal).

Une première résidence fin janvier va permettre à Robin Meier de préparer cette création à la SAT en relation avec le Lieu multiple et dans ce processus d’échange avec la SAT.

"Blind date" is a teleshared action, part of the INTACT project, proposed and directed by Sara Malinarich.
This is a collaborative work between the artists Sara Malinarich and Aida Mañez that makes a connection through Internet in which both artists meet for the first time. A relationship in the distance, that begins by working together.
Naked in her home bathroom, in Cuenca, Spain, Sara Malinarich reveals her body through painting, while from Valencia, Aida Mañez watches her, observes her and wants to touch her.
Cita a ciegas incorporates in this action, the body of the artist as a medium for the other artist; whom, from a distance, is not a context but a part of her interlocutor in real time.
Head and body, two artists fragmenting and traveling through the net to form a body, to complete each other, to communicate and create together in space, distance and at the same time.

INTRODUCTION:

INTACT is an experimental research project, in the field of cyberculture, dedicated to the development of teleshared actions (1)   It uses telepresence and the constitution of a cooperative network for shared telematic creation. Our research is an attempt  to observe the mind’s negotiations within its process to understand the construction of augmented reality, as well as the transformation, within a system of mediatized communication and perception, of oneself in front of another. Creation through distance, via telematic transmission, participate in the demolition of sociocultural and territorial borders, sheds light on the drama of absence and the possibility of cohesion between people through technological spell. One of our strategy for telepresence is trying to surpass the limitations of the world’s physical reality. We will intent, via remote communication, to overcome the notion of "bodyless messages" inherent in telecommunication systems. Telepresence is itself an expanded communication, therefore it enables corporal messages to be implemented into interpersonal relations. Nevertheless, communication through distance implies numerous problematics occurring with data transmission, besides the ones that can be found in the physical world.  Among these problematics are : space, time, body, mind, connection, context, message, interactions, audiences and interfaces. Telepresence is, by essence, a form of illusive desire for the other. But practices of telematic creation suppose the need of a networked collective awareness; a certain conscience of the fragility occuring during physical, emotional or technological connection, as well as a predisposition for co-responsability (co-author) and collaborative work.

SUMMARY OF THE RESIDENCE PROJECT: PROJECT: Teleshared multicast installation We will work in the development of a TELESHARED MULTICAST INSTALLATION to development of "transpersonal technologies" and cyberception. More precisely,  our idea is to create experiences enabling us to play with the space & time notions through delocalization : transforming space into time. We plan on working on the development of new options for individuals to perceive and transform their relation to others. For this, we will experiment with the senses, and will try to overcome the notion of "bodyless messages". The idea is to allow a sensitive modification of remote spaces, an exemple would be to expand it to the possibilities of physical touch, in order to venture into more corporal messages. - Robotics: Arduinos in network for the sensory and analog experience. – Telecommunications: audiovisual communication by scenic – Virtual reality: 3D for contents and interactive imaginaries Within these three lines of technological development, we are looking forward to open new spaces, new issues and relations, new narrative forms, new meanings, new consciousness, new ethics and aesthetics, new emotions, new bodies : transhumance-transmind.

DEVELOPMENT: Technological development: Arduinos in network

1.- ROBOTIC: Analog telepresence Supervised by Hangar interactive and production laboratories. Programer and developers: Alex Posada (Arduino) and Sergi Larios (server), with the collaboration of developers from SAT (Alexandre Quessy and Micha Seta).

Development and implementation of networked Arduinos connected directly by Ethernet inputs. That way, neither the computer nor a specific software is necessary. Within this “Arduinos network”, each node will be able to receive and send data (client/ server). In order to manage communication and connect the different nodes, we will set up a server and a website providing a control panel. With this control panel, each user will be able to configure the connections between Arduinos (inputs and outputs). For a first phase, we are thinking of distributing Arduinos among INTACT community as a complement to Scenic software. Scenic has a MIDI module, therefore it will be possible to connect this networked Arduinos via MIDI protocol, and thus creating a bridge between hardware and software.  

 The Arduino nodes, although interconnected, can be developed independently, through a simple and cheap process. This potential will help extend telepresence possibilities and experiments. At the same time, networked Arduinos connected by Ethernet will help expandin the network of nodes and enable the convergence of users regardless their connection speed.This will allow multicast network by sensors and actuators. This implementation to Scenic system will allow more corporal and sensorial experiences, knowing that any sensorial experience needs a comprehension of its cause and effect. Adding to this the audiovisual component inherent to any telecommunication system, we envision this development as a possibility to expand the experience of telepresence within telecommunicatio (Scenic).

"Recovery of a painted memory" is the document of a telematics action done by the artists Sara Malinarich (from Paris) and María Domínguez Alba (from Cuenca) through web cameras in real time. This video, divided in two screens, shows a teleshared action made between these two artists: in the upper part we see the scene produced in Paris and in the lower part the result of an intervention made simultaneously through software, of the same scene, made by Alexander Berthier at the time of the action.

This proposal shows a collaborative work where two artists in two different geographical locations meet on a digital base in real time. Using a videoconference system, the participants of this work appoint each other to meet at a certain time to make this experimentation.

None of them know what the other will do, but they observe each other in the screens and each of them gives the other a context to create. Like one dreaming the other. An action such as putting a clay mask on the face can have strange connotations when the other artist, from far away intervenes this act changing its meaning, however, this is reciprocal.

Somehow, delocalize scenarios and place them together in a digital platform means to get basic elements for a real communication or connection, like cognition and intuition. The challenge of any collaborative action is to be open to fragmentation, cloning and flowing for a time with no shape that is the flow of information in the Internet.

The ways of life in the net, the spaces for action and the ways of connecting through electricity assume our acts through light and we are left wondering about which is the real platform in a collaborative telematic action.

STAY IN PLACE is a connection moment between two friends through Chat by Internet. In this sense, a teleshared space arises between them when both maintain a telematic talk by this channel.

This scene is captured by Sara Malinarich, with the intention to trap this spontaneous action in which both achieve to articulate a narration in the context of an unique and unrepeatable situation.

The woman on the upper window is Maren Pimstein, located in Santiago of Chile at 14:32 hrs. of June 12 of the 2006; the other one is Sara Malinarich, located in Cuenca, Spain at 19:32hrs of that same day.

Years ago, both women were friends at  Universidad de Chile. Usually, Maren and Sara used to wear make-up every time before going out. The day in which this action occured, Sara had to leave again. For this reason she took her make-up again and began painting her face, using the screen of the computer as a mirror, becoming an intangible backup for her friend… that, from the other side, feels the familiarity of the scene. Finally, both know that this is a renewal of their old complicities.

This work speaks us, not only of a concrete theme of human relationships, also of the simultaneous and multicultural settings produced by the connection by webcam across the distance… the connection as a umbilical cord. In the same way, meeting places and people on a digital backup. This technological backup admits new elements of composition, implying new narrative possibilities, but also present us anxieties such as where the action occurs? How many actions have been produced on a simultaneous way? Why these friends have been motivated by their digital clones?

STAY IN PLACE is a proposal directed to the experimentation into the cyberculture land, oriented to the collaborative creation to distance through Internet. This artwork arises after the development of other projects proposed and directed by the author of this piece, related to the scenic arts and the new technologies, such as, "ORBITA. Festival for the teleshared actions by webcam" (2004-2005) and "INTACT. Interface for the teleshared action" (2005-2006).

The reflections considered in the implementation of ITCT at the service of the scenic arts, are basically the digitalization of the body and the transmission of data in real time, as well as the fusion of the scenes into one space of digital nature. STAY IN PLACE connects elements that are inherent to the action and the new technologies, such as: Light, connection, velocity, body, sound, communication, virtuality and digital code, de-materialization and data transformation.

For the first time in the Comunidad Valenciana there will be a teleshared action through the show Aguas Corrientes, that will take place in Sala Magatzem (Turia, 53) Friday 11th of July at 23h.
The show, composed by an action and three video creations, will be open until the 31st of July.

ABSENCE OF DEFINITION / ABSENCE OF LIMITS. AVOID TO DEFINE

Many idioms in one language.
To have, to stay. Just concepts drawn in a collective mind to define, to place barriers in thoughts and actions, but never in the feeling that there is something basic that liberates the fear to lose.
So many trials in one common intention, disorganize oneself (go beyond the limit, decompose what is done, the own identity and get free in nothing when avoiding to define).

A WORLD WITHOUT WORLD

Wooden columns appear on image, beginning of a house in construction, symbol of home and settling in a place, any place. The house, during the action, it is being built beam by beam. Once built, a strong gale wiped out the place, taking with it the house and the illusion.
Culture and fake, reality and virtuality, daily life and fiction.
Modifier of spaces, of time and distances… Reality has become a naked and vulnerable simulation of itself.

Dress as an executive, the artist is ready to work in an office desk, however, inside her briefcase; there are only sheets to iron. These sheets are her resume and while the artist irons them, from Asturias, the artist Vicente Pastor makes the action of the destruction of an installation symbolizing home.
This action is a critique to the situation of many emigrants, which even though professionally prepared, do not find a job in the field they studied. In the case of the women, judgment goes further, alluding to the inequality and machismo in working activities.

This teleshared action makes reference to the relationship between memory and identity. In an evocative way, this work talks about personal memories; the ones that are shared and pass through the ones around us.

This piece proposes the existence of the individual in its context and its situation of belonging, as long as the ones around it can also account for the truthfulness of the memories and merits that the subject says are his.

Under the subject Migraciones para un sueño, this work reflects upon what gets lost of a person when it migrates and how, through memory, it looks itself in the middle of the anonymity, sometimes impotent.

This teleshared action could be considered an action-installation where the artist, Sara Malinarich, is present “inside” a computer screen, which is at the same time seated in a rocket chair. Behind the rocket chair, there is a projection where a video made by Vicente Pastor and Ernesto García can be seen. This video is being send at that moment via Internet through a videoconference system. The video shows a route made in one day of a life and works as a context to articulate the memories and wonderings that that Sara gives to things and to the people in the video.

Sara is looking for herself in another, in the route of her action partners. The artist- also an emigrant in Spain- looks for herself, for the times she couldn’t be sure of her past; the one that doesn’t exist in the memory of the ones surrounding her at the moment. Alienated, Sara is looking for Sara, as if it was someone else.

Teleshared actions are procedures for collaborative creation in real time. The works are produced online between two or more users by means of interactive systems or telepresence. These expanded performative practices generate new spaces, languages and narrative forms. The possibility of the “body-less” message. And all of this founded on a basic concept: transform space into time.

The workshop consists of teleshared actions which give an incentive to experimentation and critical reflection in relation to remote communication processes.

The workshop has as its main participants: María Domínguez Alba, Manuel Terán, ErnestoGarcía and Sara Malinarich, who collaborate in the areas of lighting, use of camera, video, sound, plastic, action, contents, interfaces and documentation.

At distance, experiments are carried out, co-authoring with Alexandre Berthier from Canada and Vicente Pastor from Portugal, who will interact in real time with the participants by means of video conference systems and other software.
